Israel sent two members of the Israeli Defense Forces General Staff to Russia Monday with Prime Minister Netanyahu. Officials want to make a point to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the current move of Russian troops into Syria is considered a serious situation by the Israeli government.
Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot and Maj. Gen. Herzl Halevi were sent in this unusual move to discuss preventing Hezbollah from obtaining Russian-made weapons.
In the past Israel has targeted Hezbollah and weapons facilities in Syria, against advanced weapons systems. But now the effort has been compromised by the setting up of Russian guns and combat planes in Latakia. Now the IDF has the obstacle of trying not to cause an incident by accidently hitting one of Russia’s soldier, while trying to prevent enemies from obtaining weapons.
In 2013 and 2014, Israel was allegedly involved in airstrikes on weapons sites in Latakia.
