Following Russia’s announcement they were forming a world military coalition to go after the Islamic terrorist group ISIS in Iraq and Syria, U.S. officials announced they would be placing financial sanctions against members of the terrorist group and their alleged supporters.
The Treasury Department announced the action against 15 people and groups, some of whom the government now considers to be “supporters” or “facilitators” for the terrorists.
“Treasury remains relentless about depleting ISIL’s financial strength and denying this violent terrorist group access to the international financial system,” said Adam J. Szubin, acting undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.
The list reportedly has 10 people and 5 groups that include British and French citizens. U.S. officials claim the action against the 15 “imposes sanctions and penalties” that will not only hurt the 15 on the list but cause harm to the financial interests of the terrorist group. ISIS has been in control of major oil fields in the region making an estimated $3 million a day in illegal oil sales.
