A new book is claiming Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is implanting microchips in the brains of soldiers.
The book, “The Pentagon’s Brain,” claims that DARPA has started a program implanting chips claiming they are looking to find a way to help those suffering from traumatic brain injuries.
“Of the 2.5 million Americans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, 300,000 of them came home with traumatic brain injury,” author Annie Jacobsen told NPR. “DARPA initiated a series of programs to help cognitive functioning, to repair some of this damage. And those programs center around putting brain chips inside the tissue of the brain.”
DARPA had previously announced their intent to place chips inside the brains of wounded soldiers, in a program called RAM (Restoring Active Memory.) However, DARPA has claimed that tests on humans would not be able to take place for 4-5 years. Jacobsen claims the research is happening now.
Jacobsen also claims the implanted chips are designed to enhance human thinking, not just heal any brain injuries.
“When you see all of these brain mapping programs going on, many scientists wonder whether this will [be what it takes] to break that long-sought barrier of AI,” Jacobsen told NPR.
