In what some observers are calling a real-life version of the movie “Minority Report”, Hitachi is claiming they now have software that can predict crimes before they actually take place.
The Hitachi Visualization Predictive Crime Analytics (PCA) reportedly analyzes data from multiple sources and then uses “machine-learning” to find patterns of potential violent behavior that humans would overlook on their own.
Darren Lipscomb, one of the investors of the system, told Fast Company that unlike humans which rely on their own experiences and personal variables, the system looks at nothing but cold data. The PCA will track items like weather patterns, social media activity, gunshot sensors, changes in traffic in public transit and other factors to tell police where crimes are likely to take place.
The computer will even learn the local slang of gangs and residents so that it can accurately follow any social media posting in its coverage area.
Hitachi said they will be giving the system to a number of police departments and law enforcement agencies so they can see the system in action. The company would not say where the machines will be deployed or when they would go into use.
