The Values Voter summit will take place today in Washington, a gathering of Christian conservatives.
GOP Presidential front-runner Donald Trump will speak at the event, however Jeb Bush will not be able to attend. Bush’s camp offering to send a videotaped message to the event, the offer was declined.
Bush is the only major Republican candidate to miss this year’s meeting.
Former Hewlett-Packard boss Carly Fiorina, who had a strong showing in last week’s Republican debate with a decisive anti-abortion message, will be campaigning in Iowa and will miss the event as well.
Ohio Governor John Kasich and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will also be no-shows.
Some say it’s going to be a missed opportunity for Bush, who was in New York this week to see Pope Francis. Bush is a convert to Catholicism and could be letting a prime opportunity slip through his fingers to reach out to a large section of the Republican voter base and make an effort to counter the upward rise of Donald Trump.
Gary Bauer, former President of the Family Research Council, the event’s organizer, saying “I can’t figure out Governor Bush’s strategy. He’s pro-life. He’s got plenty to talk about to this group.”
Faith and Freedom Coalition executive director Timothy Head says that evangelicals are responding to candidates Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Rick Santorum and Marco Rubio. All four will speak at the event.
