A new documentary has identified a former member of late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi as a key player and likely bomb-maker behind the bombing of Pan-Am Flight 103 that killed 270 people in the sky over Lockerbie, Scotland.
The filmmakers found evidence implicating Abu Agila Mas’ud, a technical expert now jailed for bomb-making, was involved with the only man convicted for the crime, former Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al-Megrahi. Mas’ud, along with former Libyan spy head Abdullah Senussi, greeted Al-Megrahi when he was returned to Libya in a “compassionate release” from prison because of terminal cancer.
“We always suspected Mas’ud was the technical expert who armed the device, but we could never prove it,” Richard Marquise, the FBI’s key investigator in the Lockerbie incident, told Scotland’s Sunday Mail.
Much of the information in the documentary comes from Musbah Eter. Eter, a former Libyan operative, turned himself into authorities in 1986 after falling in love with a German woman and desiring to return to Germany. He admitted to the Le Belle disco bombing in Berlin in 1986 and was sentenced to 12-14 years in prison.
