Just days after calling at the UN for an international military coalition to fight Islamic terrorist group ISIS in Syria, and hours after getting the unanimous permission of the Parliament to launch air strikes, Russian President Vladimir Putin has put his troops to work.
US officials confirmed to Reuters that just hours ago Russian planes launched their first bombing runs on ISIS targets. The strikes took place around the city of Homs in the western part of Syria near the Lebanon border.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that 27 people were killed in the airstrikes including six children.
Russian officials called on the US and other western nations to leave Syrian airspace because, unlike Russia, they had not been invited in to fight the terrorists by Syrian President Bashir al-Assad.
“You all know well that in the territory of Syria and Iraq … a number of countries are carrying out bombing strikes, including the United States,” Putin’s chief of staff Sergei Ivanov told Fox News. “These actions do not conform with international law. To be legal they should be supported either by a resolution of the UN security council, or be backed by a request from the country where the raids are taking place.”
