The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), which takes actions to eliminate references to God or Christianity from the military, is targeting a Marine base in Hawaii for a sign that asks for God’s blessing over the troops, their families and civilians.
The MRFF has sent an email to Col. Sean Killeen, commanding officer of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, demanding the removal of a sign that was put in place shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The sign reads: “God bless the military, their families, and the civilians who work with them.”
“This sign is a brazen violation of the No Establishment clause of the Constitution, as it sends the clear message that your installation gives preference to those who hold religious beliefs over those who do not, and those who prefer a monotheistic, intervening God over other deities or theologies,” MRFF’s Blake Page wrote in the email to Killeen.
MRFF head Mikey Weinstein claims that 23 Marines contacted him about the sign but none of them wanted to be identified or make a complaint through their chain of command out of fear of reprisal.
The Marine Corps Times reports that commanders are “looking into the situation.”
