The shooting death of a Palestinian woman by Israeli Defense Forces is causing controversy as Palestinians try to claim the woman was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
The burka-wearing woman, identified at Hadeel al-Haslamun, approached a group of soldiers at a checkpoint with a satchel clearly on display. She began to approach soldiers at which point she pulled out a knife. The IDF forces told her to stop advancing, then shot into the ground to warn her, then shot at her legs before firing into her lower body.
A pro-Palestinian group Youth Against Settlements published a series of photos taken from a distance that showed the encounter. The photographer was positioned in a place to capture the entire encounter between the woman and the soldiers. The group also claimed that the troops left the woman to bleed to death without help.
Despite the Palestinian claims, photographs from the scene showed a knife that the woman was holding under her burka as she approached the troops. The IDF also dismissed the claims they did not provide medical assistance.
“Treatment began immediately upon the medical team’s arrival to the checkpoint. The treatment was discontinued for a period of two minutes in order to ensure that the perpetrator wasn’t armed with explosives, after which the medical team continued the treatment,” read an IDF statement.
