The current scandal plaguing German automaker Volkswagen may actually reach as high as Chancellor Angela Merkel, after the revelation that government ministers knew that VW was installing cheat devices to get around US diesel emissions tests – and did nothing about it.
A source telling the UK’s Daily Telegraph that ministers were warned months ago of so-called defeat device software installed on Volkswagen diesel cars. The transport ministry saying in response to a parliamentary question that – quote – the federal government is aware of (defeat devices) which have the goal of (test) detection.’
The Telegraph pointing out that while the statement from the government didn’t specifically single out Volkswagen, that a question from a member of the country’s Green Party that came before the statement implied that the carmaker had authorized the unethical procedure.
Green Party leader Oliver Krischer telling German state television that “it’s clear they knew the software was widely in use.”
Reuters, meanwhile, is reporting that VW sent recall letters to California owners of its diesel powered cars this past April, telling them to take the vehicles to the dealer for new software that VW said would make sure emissions were optimized and operating efficiently.
Reuters saying that VW had mailed the letters to try and fed off suspicions from US regulators who were already looking into discrepancies between the company’s lab emissions test results and the amount of real-world pollution the cars created.
