Enormous crowds lined the streets near St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City Thursday night to get a glimpse of Pope Francis as the pontiff’s visit to the Big Apple began.
The pope waved to the crowds, giving blessings and even a thumbs-up sign.
Among those greeting Pope Francis were New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill DeBlasio and Senator Charles Schumer.
During prayers Thursday night, the Pope thanked American nuns for what he called their strength and courage, drawing a round of applause from nuns and priests as well.
Today the pope will speak to the United Nations, take part in a service at the September 11th memorial, and conduct mass at Madison Square Garden. He’ll also visit a school in East Harlem and take a brief tour of Central Park, and then it’s on to Philadelphia.
