Mention the word “birthday” to an average nine-year-old, and thoughts of fun and cool presents will fill their heads. Ethan Flint is apparently not your average nine-year-old. The fourth-grader from St. Paul, Minnesota donated $1200 to the St. Paul Police Department to help get bulletproof vests for the force’s K-9 unit. KSMP-TV says Flint was matter-of-fact about his reasoning: “Some dogs have vests and some dogs didn’t and I didn’t think that was fair.” A bulletproof vest for a dog can run around $2,600.
Sgt .John Linssen told local TV station ABC7, “I think it’s outstanding. That a 9-year-old could think of something like that is remarkable. A vest on a human is like a vest on a dog. It covers their body. It protects them from bullets and being stabbed.”
This was no sudden decision for Ethan; he’s been donating his birthday money since the ripe old age of 4. Ethan has also helped raise money for the Lake Superior Zoo’s reconstruction after a devastating flood, to help give giraffes a home at the Como Zoo and even help frogs and snakes through the Minnesota Herpetological Society.
Ethan already has plans for next year. He says he wants to help penguins or turtles.
Ethan’s justifiably proud mom, Jennifer Flint, says “A lot of talk over the years has been, ‘It’s better to give and have other people benefit from the generosity you have in your family.’”
