The death of Dubai’s ruler was announced in the blandest terms:
“The oldest son of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum died of a heart attack at age 33 Saturday morning,” read the brief from the United Arab Emirates official news agency WAM.
“Sheik Rashid was the eldest son of Sheikh Mohammed.”
A three day mourning period was announced, and that’s about all the official information that was on offer.
But if you read between the lines, you could smell that something wasn’t quite right.
What, precisely, had caused the death of a fit young man who back in 2006 had won two gold medals in the sport of equestrian at the Asian Games?
And another question: Why was Sheikh Rashid not the crown prince of Dubai? This was, after all, the eldest son of Sheikh Mohammed. Why was his little brother, Sheikh Hamdan, the next in line?
