The story of Texas high school student Ahmed Mohammed and his homemade clock seems to be taking a new twist. Mohammed was arrested last week after bringing a homemade clock to school which one teacher commented looked like a bomb.
The uproar over the device – and Ahmed’s arrest – wound up getting Mohammed invited to the White House and support from around the world – only now, some people are beginning to question Mohammed’s technical skills.
Critics examining photographs of the device are saying it looks like Mohammed simply took a disassembled Radio Shack clock and stuck it in a metal box.
Evolutionary biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins commenting on Twitter that “assembling clock from bought components is fine. Taking clock out of its case to make it look as if he built it is not fine. Which is true?” Dawkins referring to a YouTube video by electrical expert Thomas Talbot, which closely examines a photograph of the clock.
The video, which has been viewed more than a half a million times, shows Talbot arguing that the clock is actually a commercially available alarm clock taken out of its case, explaining that features of the “homemade” clock, such as printed circuit boards and ribbon cables, are signs the device was professionally manufactured. A blog called Art Voice says the device looks like a 1980s digital alarm clock sold by Radio Shack, pointing also to the silkscreened letters and numbers on the circuit board.
