Russian soldiers have contacted the Human Rights Council about fears of being sent to fight in Syria. The president of the Russian group, Sergei Krivenko told the BBC he was seeking verification from the Russian military. Officials reportedly told some armed service members to be ready to fight in a “hot country”. Recently, Moscow sent equipment to the Syrian government.
He claims any secret deployment would be illegal. Krivenko said Putin would have to sign a decree, which must be made public. The Kremin denied any knowledge of the soldiers sending messages about Syria to the Human Rights Council. But on Friday, Gazeta.ru reported Russian professional soldiers and military hardware were shipped to Syria quietly. Soldiers interviewed by the news agency said they were not told of their mission until they arrived for duty.
Meanwhile, a top Russian security official reports 2,400 Russians have joined ISIS, including Chechens.
More Muslim communities have been popping up in Russia’s North Caucasus. An anti-Moscow insurgency continues in the region. According to estimates, ISIS has 20,000 foreign fighters, mostly Arabs. But 3,400 are from Europe.
On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged military support for Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, whose forces are fighting ISIS.
