A 91 year old woman has been charged with assisting in the deaths of more than a quarter of a million Jews in the Auschwitz death camp.
The woman, who has not been publicly identified, served as a member of the Nazi SS, according to authorities. She’s accused of working as a radio operator for the commandant of Auschwitz from April until July of 1944, during which time scores of Hungarian Jews were slaughtered in gas chambers.
Prosecutors expect the woman will be charged as an accessory because she aided in the camp’s overall operations. A prosecution spokesman says there is no sign that the woman is not fit to stand trial, although it’s not likely a court will decide on a case until next year.
This is just the latest in a string of efforts by Germany to bring surviving Holocaust criminals to justice. Of the 6,500 former SS members who worked at Auschwitz, only 50 have so far been convicted in Germany, mainly because the courts have long since argued that only senior camp leaders can be held responsible for Holocaust crimes.
Earlier this year, the so-called ‘bookkeeper of Auschwitz,” 94 year-old Oskar Groenig was placed in custody in a similar case. The prosecution said Groenig’s presence created an atmosphere of threat to Jews entering the camp. In 2005, Groenig admitted to taking part in prisoner selections for the gas chambers, and said he bears some of the moral guilt for the atrocities committed at the camp.
