Retired and disgraced Army General David Petraeus appeared before Congress Tuesday, essentially to discuss the Middle East, but not before issuing a surprise apology to those in attendance for his sharing of classified information with his mistress / biographer. Petraeus called it a “violation of trust.” It was the former head of the CIA’s first public testimony to lawmakers since stepping down from his former post.
Petraeus said, “Four years ago, I made a serious mistake — one that brought discredit on me and pain to those closest to me. It was a violation of the trust placed in me and a breach of the values to which I had been committed throughout my life.”
Petraeus went on to say that he can’t undo what he did, adding “I can only say again how sorry I am to those I let down and then strive to go forward with a greater sense of humility and purpose, and with gratitude to those who stood with me during a very difficult chapter in my life.”
It was then that Petraeus got down to the subject of the meeting, presenting a dismal picture of the state of the Middle East. Petraeus described it as an area in the midst of a “revolutionary upheaval that is unparalleled in its modern history.” Petraeus says the progress of the fight against ISIS is ‘inadequate,” and suggested that the United States boost its support to Iraqi security forces as well as Sunni tribal and Kurdish fighters. Petraeus warning lawmakers that Syria is a “geopolitical Chernobyl” whose fallout “will be felt for decades.”
