Three explosions rocked the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri Sunday night killing at least 54 people. More than 90 were injured. Police believe the bombs were homemade and set off by a female suicide bomber.
Boko Haram has taken responsibility for the attack. One bomb went off at a mosque and two others blew up at a popular soccer field. Experts say the group wants to establish Sharia law in that area. Two million people have been forced from their homes since 2009.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, during his campaign earlier this year, made eradicating the group a key pledge. He said recently that traditional attacks were declining as the group focuses on “soft” targets.
The Nigerian military has said the rebels were weakened and that their leader Abubakar Shekau had died. But a recording released on social media Saturday by Bok Haram refuted those claims.
