Israel PM Visits Russia Amid Concerns Over Syria - from TRUNEWS

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to Russia Monday to meet with Vladimir Putin amid concerns over reports Moscow is sending troops and equipment to Syria.

In the past, Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah insurgents have used the war in Syria to build up forces along Golan Heights to attack Israel. The Israelis have also responded to fire from forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who Russia backs. Now Israel is concerned about hitting Russians.

“It complicates reality. It potentially limits Israel’s freedom of action,” said Ehud Eiran, apolitical science professor at Haifa University, in a Christian Science Monitor Interview.

Israel is also concerned Syria will provide weapons to Hezbollah. But Putin dismissed it.

“We have always condemned the rocket attacks on Israel, but as far as I know those rockets are homemade,” Putin said, according to RT. “As for Syria, we know and understand that the Syrian army and the country in general are not in a condition to open a second front. The Syrians are busy fighting for their own statehood.”

Afterward, Netanyahu called the talks “substantive”. Both countries agreed to prevent misunderstandings, but that his country would continue to block weapons transfers from Syria and Lebanon to military at Golan Heights.
