Just days after the head of MI5 said that 3,000 potential terrorists were within Britain, now the spy agency is admitting they are paying Muslims to spy on each other.
Sources within the Muslim community are reporting that at least one informant was paid 2,000 British pounds (approximately $3,100 US dollars) to report on activities at a mosque for six weeks.
The payments were part of a program on the part of British intelligence called “Pursue.” The official mission of Pursue is to “stop terrorist attacks in this country and against our interest overseas. This means detecting and investigating threats at the earliest possible stage.”
A source told the London Guardian newspaper the program has “been driven by the [intelligence] agencies, it’s a network of human resources across the country engaged to effectively spy on specific targets. It’s decent money.”
Andrew Parker, the first MI5 director-general to ever do a live broadcast interview, said that in the last 12 months British counter-terrorism officials have stopped six plots. They didn’t specifically mention information as a result of Pursue but did say that mental health challenged Muslim youth were a target by those seeking to carry out attacks.
“Most of the people who try to become involved in terrorism in this country are people who were born and brought up here, have come through our education system, and have nonetheless concluded that the country — their home country and the country of their birth — is their enemy,” Parker told BBC Radio 4.
The intelligence service along with Britain’s home secretary are calling for more surveillance of citizens and have released this information as part of their campaign to gain support for the move.
Leading Muslim officials were critical of the payments given to informants.
“We want our national security protected but, as with everything, there needs to be due scrutiny and we need to ensure things are done properly,” Salman Farsi, spokesman for the East London Mosque, told the Guardian.
“If there’s money on the table, where’s the scrutiny or the oversight to ensure whether someone has not just come up with some fabricated information? Money can corrupt.”
