In Pittsburgh, one hospital is trying to figure out if the deaths of two patients can be linked to infections from mold they may have contracted while in Intensive Care.
UPMC saying that its cardiothoracic IC unit was closed for a cleanup after mold was found. Eighteen patients were sent to other hospitals, one lung transplant patient becoming ill with a mold infection on his lung tissue. Two heart transplant patients who died had contracted fungal infections and stayed in the unit.
The type of mold found in the two heart transplant patients was different than that found in the lung transplant patient.
The hospital says it’s combing through patient records to determine if there is a connection.
