The Russian cabinet has decided to ban production of foods that contain GMOs.
“As far as genetically-modified organisms are concerned, we have made decision not to use any GMO in food productions,” Deputy PM Arkady Dvorkovich said at an international conference on biotechnology in Kirov.
But Dvorkovich made it clear there is a difference between the use of GMO products for food and using them for scientific purposes.
In February 2014, Russia created an agency to provide the government with information about genetically-modified organisms. They also called for a bill restricting imports of GMO produce, while banning domestic production. Businesses would be fined for selling GMO products that do not containing proper labeling. Currently, there are only 57 registered foods in Russia containing GMOs.
In 2012 Russia banned the import of Monsanto’s corn after it was linked to tumors in rats. The findings were released, but then retracted by the publisher, even though the author defended the study, according to nature.com.
On Thursday France joined Scotland, Germany, Latvia and Greece in accepting the “opt-out” clause of an EU rule that allows its member bloc to abstain from growing GMO crops, according to ecowatch.com. France had already prohibited the cultivation of any variety of the genetically modified maize.
