Doggerland, as it was known, was some 100,000 square miles in area and home to tens of thousands of stone-age families living it was is believed could have been a prehistoric centre of Europe.
Rising seas took the community’s homes around 7,500 years ago, but now thanks to specialist 4D technology, archaeologists plan to research how life was on the vast lost region for around 6.000 years before it became part of the ocean.
Professor Vince Gaffney from the University of Bradford, who is coordinating a team of investigators, said: “The only populated lands on earth that have not yet been explored in any depth are those which have been lost underneath the sea.
“This project will develop technologies and methodologies that archaeologists around the world can use to explore similar landscapes including those around the Americas.”
